OI is an interdisciplinary collaboration based on the ongoing dialogue between textile designer Francesca Perona and graphic designer Anouk Sylvestre. Their different backgrounds imply an exchange of contrasting and often opposite perspectives, as in terms of form (logo vs pattern), process (reduction vs multiplication) and perception (visual vs haptic).
The opposite perspectives merge in the search of communicative and performative potential of smart and responsive materials. This materiality leads the designers to push their two dimensional practices into the third dimension, by turning inert materials into interactive textural surfaces, through programmed transformative processes.
In OI 01 the duo explores the tension between existence and in-existence. Invisible forces shape material patterns and textural volumes. Visual simplicity is defined by material richness, resulting in an installation of minimal physical aesthetics, a distilled visual expression of the sophisticated material behaviour.
OI was presented at the 2014 V&A Digital Design weekend.
